VTT showcased MODIX at the Sustainable Materials and Processes Pilot Facilities
Grand opening of Sustainable materials and processes pilot facilities at VTT Tampere
On 7th March 2025, the eLECTRO project was showcased at the grand opening of the Sustainable Materials and Processes Pilot Facilities event at VTT Tampere, Finland. The event, which was opened by VTT CEO Antti Vasara and VTT Board Chair Antti Tiitinen, highlighted the innovative work being done in sustainable materials and processes.
Nearly 70 company representatives and stakeholders from multiple fields, including plastics, machinery, pulp and paper, metallurgy, powders, and academia, were introduced to VTT’s pilot environment for circular plastics and textiles, recyclable and bio-based materials, and metal powder processing. Customers were introduced to innovative equipment suitable for recycling thermoplastic materials.
VTT showcased MODIX, a revolutionary cylindrical extruder and its pre-treatment and impurity removal capabilities, of various challenging and heterogeneous MPW materials for mechanical or chemical recycling. Examples of such heterogeneous and challenging-to-feed materials include e.g. fluffy plastic films, foams, plastic bottles, canisters, and mixed plastic waste including paper, carton and pieces of wood. MODIX extruder has shown significant potential as a pre-treatment method for pyrolysis. This innovation is a significant step towards achieving circularity in thermoplastic materials and demonstrates VTT’s commitment to sustainable solutions.
